UHN scientists discover stem cells that cause colon cancer – 11/20/2006
Scientists at University Health Network have discovered that colon cancer originates from rare colon cancer stem cells. This new knowledge is key for developing new targeted therapies that prevent recurrence of the disease. Only one in 57,000 colon tumour cells is a cancer stem cell.

UHN boasts first 'protected' islet cell transplantation in North America – 03/09/2005
Physicians at Toronto General Hospital, part of University Health Network successfully performed North America’s first transplantation of specially coated insulinproducing islet cells into a patient with Type 1 diabetes on Tuesday Feb 22, 2005. The special coating on the islet cells protects the transplanted cells from the body’s immune system reacting against them.
